FinScribe is a flexible web authoring application, which provides Wiki and Weblog authoring functionality in one application (commonly referred to as a "<html:a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bliki" class="wiki_link_external">bliki</html:a>".) Written as a technology demonstration for the <html:a href="/space/pike/Fins">Fins</html:a> web application framework, FinScribe has grown into a full featured application that offers the best features of many different applications in one easy to use package. FinScribe supports many of the most popular technologies and features, such as RSS feeds, Pingback, Trackback and Tag support, just to name a few. Additionally, you can add new functionality to FinScribe through the use of plugins. A number of handy plugins are supplied with FinScribe, so you get a taste of the possibilities.<html:p class="paragraph"/>
This website is powered by the current development version of FinScribe. As you may notice, FinScribe's look, feel and premise are based heavily on <html:a href="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?SnipSnap" class="wiki_link_external">SnipSnap</html:a>. FinScribe (and indeed, the whole underlying Fins framework) was born out of a desire to replace SnipSnap as the engine for this website. While it was (and is) a wonderful application, SnipSnap had a few very bad habits, such as eating a large amount of RAM and being rather slow. Additionally, SnipSnap's development pace had slowed considerably, leaving me to wonder if the shortcomings I'd encountered would be fixed or improved in a timely manner.<html:p class="paragraph"/>
After approximately a week of development, FinScribe replaced SnipSnap on this website, and we haven't looked back since. We've made a large number of enhancements since then, and hope to continue the current pace of development in the future.<html:p class="paragraph"/>
<html:i class="ital">Note:</html:i> There is no SnipSnap code in FinScribe, though the CSS stylesheets shipped with FinScribe are very slightly modified versions of those included with SnipSnap. This is primarily due to the fact that this application was designed to be at least partially compatible with SnipSnap. As things continue to develop, we'll probably replace the stylesheets with something more original. Actually, there are a few themes that you might prefer to use instead of the default.<html:p class="paragraph"/>
