reCAPTCHA

Created by hww3. Last updated by hww3, 17 years ago. Version #4.

FinScribe has support for the mandatory use of reCAPTCHA when posting comments anonymously. By requiring the use of a "bot" filter, we hope to ease the pain associated with allowing users to post comments without creating user accounts.

About reCAPTCHA

reCAPTCHA is a project of Carnegie-Mellon University, and is a program that can tell whether its user is a human or a computer. You've probably seen them colorful images with distorted text at the bottom of Web registration forms. CAPTCHAs are used by many websites to prevent abuse from "bots," or automated programs usually written to generate spam. No computer program can read distorted text as well as humans can, so bots cannot navigate sites protected by CAPTCHAs.

Configuration

To use anonymous posting, you must enable it (either at install time, or afterward by setting the comments.anonymous preference in your FinScribe's preferences (accessed via the admin link). Once it's been enabled, you need to configure reCAPTCHA for your site. It's pretty easy; just sign up for a free account at the reCAPTCHA site. When you've signed up, you should get a public key and a private key. They're strings, 40 characters in length. You need to take these keys and set the public-key and private-key preferences, respectively. You can find these settings by choosing the "reCAPTCHA support" plugin from your Admin Plugins screen.

Once you've set the keys, you should be all set. You can test it out by logging out of FinScribe and then attempting to post a comment. The reCAPTCHA widget should appear in the comment form. If you fill in the information incorrectly, the post should be disalowed.
